Mission

The Alliance was established in 1986 to address and seek solutions to the problems of racism and exclusion in film, television and theatre.  Today, its mission is to serve as an expert advocate and educational resource for full inclusion in theatre, film, television and related media.  Our current focus is to increase the participation of artists of color and artists with disabilities in the industry.

The Alliance works to promote inclusive hiring practices and standards, diversity in leadership and balanced portrayals of persons of color and persons with disabilities.  The Alliance considers diversity a comprehensive issue which extends to the participation of those who make up the artistic team: actors, directors, designers, writers, stunt performers, choreographers, as well as the production team and administrative staff, board of directors and the audience.

The Alliance advocates for the full participation of artists of color and artists with disabilities through the strengthening of culturally-specific and disability-specific institutions as well as through expanding opportunities at institutions that primarily produce or present work based in a European tradition.

Since its inception, the Alliance has been a leading voice in the movement toward inclusion.  As efforts to achieve broader diversity accelerate throughout the theatre, film and television industry, the Alliance is increasingly called upon to assist casting directors, production companies, theatre organizations, film studios and television networks with a range of needs from consulting to casting.

The Alliance’s aim is to achieve a theatre, film and television industry that more accurately reflects our populace; where each artist is considered on her/his merits as an individual; where the stories being told reflect our communities; and where our individual humanity and forms of expression can be celebrated.
